ABOUT


Established in 2008 by David and Serenella Ciclitira , the Global Eye Programme is an initiative that nurtures artistic talent. The programme aims to develop arts infrastructure in territories where this is lacking, in order to provide artists with the platforms, support and recognition they need to develop their careers. It works to build networks and opportunities for artists and galleries through strategic partnerships and a variety of platforms.

Previous projects from the Eye Programme include Korean Eye (2009 to 2012), Indonesian Eye (2011), Hong Kong Eye (2013) Malaysian Eye (2014), Singapore Eye (2015), Thailand Eye presented by Prudential (2015), AIA Vietnam Eye (2016) and Korean Eye 2020 (2020) a series of international touring exhibitions and publications providing emerging artists with opportunities to showcase their work.

In January 2014, the Global Eye Programme launched the Prudential Eye Awards in Singapore, honouring the accomplishments of emerging artists throughout greater Asia and launching a creative education programme with the British Council. The second edition of the Prudential Eye Awards was held in Singapore on 20 January 2015, at Marina Bay Sands and the Japanese collective Chim↑Pom were awarded the Overall Best Emerging Artist prize, winning USD$50,000 and a solo show at Saatchi Gallery, London.

The Prudential Eye Awards returned in 2016, featuring 15 artists who an eminent panel of Judges believe have the potential to go on and develop significant careers on the international art world stage. The awards ceremony was held at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, on 19 January 2016. A public exhibition of works by the shortlisted artists ran at ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands between 16 January and 27 March 2016. Sareth Svay from Cambodia won The Overall Best Emerging Artist award as well as the Best Emerging Artist using Sculpture award.

AIA Vietnam Eye, the 8th project in the Eye exhibition series, featured a two-month exhibition in Hanoi from 14 November 2016 to 13 January 2017. Two satellite exhibitions, curated by artist-curator Tran Luong, were staged at “Nest by AIA” in Hanoi. Artist Ha Tri Hieu was featured in the first satellite exhibition held on 19 November to 11 December 2016, and artist Nguyen The Hung was featured in the second satellite exhibition held on 17 December 2016 to 8 January 2017. AIA Vietnam Eye travelled to START 2017 at Saatchi Gallery, in September 2017.

Korean Eye 2020 presented by Hana Bank mark’s the project’s 10th anniversary. The exhibition Creativity and Daydream launched digitally, due to the global pandemic Covid-19 at the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg in March 2020, the virtual opening was live streamed and attracted more than 5000 live attendees, 40,000 people from all over the globe virtually visited the exhibition which was extended by more than two months to allow the Hermitage and the exhibition to open to physical visitors. In late September until 25 October 2020 the exhibition was expanded to include additional artists and travelled to London’s Saatchi Gallery, where it was installed at START art fair. Ahead of the London leg of the exhibition tour K-pop musician and artist Mino of band WINNER became the exhibition’s Ambassador, five of his original artworks were included in the expanded presentation to great acclaim. The final Seoul homecoming openedin  June 2021. The accompanying book published by SKIRA featuring 75 artists launched on 21 October at Saatchi during START art fair, the opening ceremony and book launch was presided over and attended by HE Enna Park, Republic of Korea Ambassador to the United Kingdom and HE Andrei Kelin, Russian Federation Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Today, the Global Eye Programme involves exhibitions, books, prizes and art fairs that take place around the world. As of late, it has hosted more than 37 exhibitions that have been viewed by more than three million people.

StART 10 year logo

StART art fair London commemorated its 10th anniversary at the renowned Saatchi Gallery in October 2023. The five-day event coinciding with FRIEZE week London. With over 90 artists from 24 countries participating, StART  once again served as a global gathering of artists and galleries. 

In celebration of the King’s Coronation and 10 years of the PFSTA Ciclitira Prize, together with the Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts (PFSTA), 58 PESTA graduated artists contributed works for a group exhibition.

This year’s Curated Projects featured Korean contemporary artist Doowon Lee’s first major exhibition in the United Kingdom in which he presented works specially produced for StART.

The ninth edition of StART took place at Saatchi Gallery Wednesday 12 - Sunday 16 October 2022. More than 70 artists from 24 countries participated in the global gathering of artists and galleries. The fair showcased local London and international galleries together with individual contemporary artists from all over the world. Collectors, enthusiasts and critics attend StART to buy the best contemporary art and to discover emerging contemporary artists.

To complement the exhibitors StART annually presents a series of must-see Curated Projects.

Keeping its finger on the pulse of the emerging global art scene, StART Art Global, together with StART Art Korea, will launch the inaugural StART Art Fair Seoul this September (2022).

Coinciding with the first FRIEZE Seoul, the inaugural StART Art Fair Seoul, held over seven days at Galleria Foret in the city’s fashionable Song Dong-gu district, will bring together a roster of emerging and established international artists.

StART Plus Logo

StART+ is an initiative launched in October 2021. StART+‘s aim is to further the careers and provide important international exposure for emerging artists. The series of curated selling exhibitions includes artworks that have been selected from StART Art Global’s extensive roster of independent artists and galleries. Each iteration presents a snapshot of the global contemporary art world today. StART+ enables artists to introduce their works to collectors, influencers, media and art-world figures in iconic, international locations including, London, New York, Cape Town and Seoul.

The inaugural StART+ launched at the ARX, a new gallery space in Knightsbridge, co-hosted together with Samsung, a curated selection of StART art fair and other unseen works were exhibited for sale, post their installation at London’s Saatchi Gallery.

The London StART+ show was followed by StART+ Cape Town (8-12 March 2022) which shone a spotlight on emerging contemporary South African art.

Korean Eye-2020-logo

A new iteration of Korean Eye marks the 10th anniversary of the Global Eye Programme. Entitled ‘Korean Eye 2020: Contemporary Korean Art’ and presented by Hana Bank, the exhibition Creativity and Daydream will take place across three global locations: The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Saatchi Gallery in London and finally in Seoul (2021). The touring exhibition presents works by emerging and established Korean artists working in photography, sculpture, painting, video, and mixed media, while the accompanying book featuring a collection of work by 75 artists edited by Serenella Ciclitira, published by SKIRA launched on 21 October 2020 at Saatchi gallery.

The seventh edition at Saatchi Gallery took place between 21-25 October 2020, one of the few art fairs to go ahead in London and the only fair to go ahead as planned in spite of the pandemic. Strict government restrictions were implement to ensure a safe environment for all exhibitors and staff. Over five days we welcomed a covid-restricted number of more than 6,500 art-lovers and collectors starved of opportunity to buy and experience a diverse curated presentation of artworks in an iconic gallery setting. Playing our part in helping to get the art-world back in business has never been more important.

START’s September 2019 VIP opening attracted more than 3000 guests including dignitaries and Ambassadors from many of the exhibitor's home countries. The fair showcased emerging and established artists from new art scenes to give art collectors and enthusiasts alike the opportunity to discover works from developing global markets. A Korean Eye 2020 teaser exhibition and Korean Eye 2020 x Roland Mouret collaboration also featured at the fair as well as an expanded events and entertainment programme.

The sixth edition featured 100+ artists and 24 galleries from 30 countries, including India, Czech Republic, South Africa, Italy and America.

START 2018 Logo

START returned to London's Saatchi Gallery in September 2018 and showcased emerging and established artists from new art scenes to give art collectors and enthusiasts alike the opportunity to discover works from developing global markets.

The fifth edition featured 45 exhibitors from over 15 countries, including Sierra Leone, Czech Republic, Sweden,Burma and Hungary.

START returned to London’s Saatchi Gallery in September 2017 continuing its ethos to present a truly global view of emerging art and art scenes. Artists and galleries came from all over the globe including Argentina, Lithuania, Nigeria, Taiwan and Vietnam. In collaboration with curatorial partners; Mehta Bell Projects, START Projects featured the first live performance by renowned Chinese artist Liu Bolin. Visitors saw Bolin disappear against a backdrop of LEGO® bricks in the form of a sunflower. The fourth edition featured 43 galleries from over 25 cities around the world, alongside a special focus on both Vietnamese and Korean art through our Global Eye Programme’s projects: Vietnam Eye and Korean Eye,

START Doha logo

In conjunction with the ‘Art for Tomorrow’ conference and in partnership with the New York Times and Saatchi Gallery, START Doha brought together a broad and receptive audience to view some of the most engaging artists working today.

Held in the cutting-edge industrial space of the 29th floor of the W Hotel from 10-14 March 2017, the boutique fair echoed the London edition’s aim to highlight emerging talent and new art scenes. Co-curated by artist Mahmoud Obaidi, and visited by Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the fair provided a snapshot of emerging art within the region.

VIetnam Eye Logo

AIA Vietnam Eye, the 8th project in the Eye exhibition series, featured a two-month exhibition in Hanoi from 14 November 2016 to 13 January 2017, showcasing works from 19 artists, satellite exhibitions at “Nest by AIA” in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, and an accompanying book, Vietnam Eye: Contemporary Vietnamese Art, featuring 56 artists.

The exhibition is a partnership between title sponsor AIA and Parallel Contemporary Art, and START at Saatchi Gallery.

It is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, the Italian Embassy in Vietnam, the British Embassy in Vietnam, and is sponsored by Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, Piaggio, Red Apron, Apollo, Carvico, and Luala Milano.

The third edition of the Prudential Eye Awards featured ten Awards, with five categories of Best Emerging Artist, using various mediums including digital/ video, installation, painting, photography and sculpture. Grace Fu, Minister of Culture, Community and Youth, officiated at the 2016 Awards, held as part of Singapore Art Week and also made the presentation to the Overall Winner.

Accompanying the awards was a public exhibition at ArtScience Museum which ran from 16 January to 27 March 2016. The exhibition highlighted 39 works from 15 shortlisted artists for the Prudential Eye Awards in the following categories: Digital/Video, Installation, Painting, Sculpture and Photography. This is the second year that Marina Bay Sands hosted the prestigious awards ceremony and an exhibition.

The third edition of START, presented by Prudential, closed on 18th September 2016 to positive critical acclaim. Visitors included established British collectors such as Richard Greer, Fatima Maleki, Cathy Wills, Lord and Lady Glentoran and Sigrid Kirk; the new generation of London collectors including Kaimar Maleki and Will de Quetteville together with international collectors such as Geetika Jain and Elijah Widjaja. START Projects 2016 focused on emerging Middle Eastern art with a presentation from Iraqi-Canadian artist Mahmoud Obaidi and a space he curated on young Qatari artists addressing the challenges faced by urbanisation and globalisation in the Middle East. Building on foundations of our inaugural edition, START featured 70 galleries from over 40 cities around the world.

Thailand Eye Logo

Thailand Eye presented by Prudential was a comprehensive survey of Thailand’s contemporary art scene through the works of some of the country’s most innovative artists. Curated by Nigel Hurst, Serenella Ciclitira and Dr Apinan Poshyananda, the exhibiting artists were chosen from over 150 submissions and represent a selection of the best contemporary art in Thailand.

Thailand Eye presented by Prudential celebrated the occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 60th anniversary and fifth cycle, which fell on 2 April 2015 and marks the 160th anniversary of Thailand-UK relations. It was a collaboration between Parallel Contemporary Art, Prudential, Saatchi Gallery, Thailand Ministry of Culture, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau and Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.

The Prudential Eye Awards held its second edition at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands on Tuesday, 20 January 2015.

Chim↑Pom (collective formed in 2005, Japan) were named as the Overall Best Emerging Artist at the Prudential Eye Awards 2015

The second edition of the Prudential Eye Awards featured 13 prizes, with six categories of Best Emerging Artist, using mediums such as digital/video, drawing, installation, painting, photography and sculpture. Each category winner was awarded USD$20,000 and a specially commissioned trophy. Out of these six artists, one overall winner was chosen for the prize of ‘Best Emerging Artist’, winning a further USD$30,000 and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the renowned Saatchi Gallery in London.

The second edition of START, presented by Prudential, featured 52 galleries from over 23 cities around the world. As part of this second edition, START Projects was introduced; a series of curator-led initiatives which featured the works of emerging artists in four sections: Ultra-technologist phenomenon teamLab, ‘This is Tomorrow’, a solo exhibition by Eye Award winners Chim↑Pom and a focused look at Singapore contemporary art in the ‘Prudential Eye Zone’. Singapore Eye debuted as the largest exhibition on Singapore contemporary art at ArtScience Museum on 17 January 2015. The 6-month exhibition is a key highlight of Singapore Art Week and is also the first major art exhibition that kick started the celebration of the nation’s 50th anniversary. This selection is a showcase of the country's best artists and aims to be a benchmark and a resource for curators, critics and collectors and gallerists.

The exhibition was also held alongside international art fair, Art Stage Singapore (22 – 25 January 2015 ) and the second Prudential Eye Awards for Asian Contemporary Asian Art held on 20 January 2015.

Launched in 2014, the prestigious Prudential Eye Awards for Contemporary Asian Art recognises the best emerging Asian contemporary artists as well as the leading exhibitions, galleries, institutions and art critics working to promote contemporary art in the region.

As a key event of Singapore Art Week, the Prudential Eye Awards has been integral in raising Singapore's profile as a leading international destination for contemporary art. The positive outcomes from the inaugural Awards have reinforced the importance of Prudential’s support for new art from the region.

The inaugural START art fair was held at the Saatchi Gallery in London from 26 to 29 June 2014. START art fair presented by Prudential is dedicated to supporting international galleries that are less than eight years old from both the world’s most exciting emerging markets, and established artistic centres. The first edition saw more than 11,000 visitors over 5 days and brought together exhibitors from the world’s most exciting emerging markets alongside young, cutting-edge galleries from Asia, Europe, UK and USA.

Malaysian Eye logo

Malaysian Eye was a showcase of Malaysian contemporary art presenting over 50 works by 21 emerging artists from the country.

The exhibition was held at MAP@Publika Mall from 29 March to 30 April 2014. Some of the works went on to be featured at START, a contemporary art fair held at the Saatchi Gallery, London from 26 to 29 June 2014.

Hong Kong Eye logo

Hong Kong Eye was the first major international showcase of Hong Kong contemporary art, drawing upon a pool of exceptionally talented artists who were eager to express the nuances of their own artistic environment.

Presenting over 50 works by 18 emerging artists from Hong Kong, the exhibition was held at Saatchi Gallery, London from 4 December 2012 to 12 January 2013 and returned to Hong Kong in May 2013 with an exhibition held at ArtisTree.

Korean Eye 2012 showcased a collection of key works by 33 contemporary Korean artists, including painters, sculptors and photographers. The exhibition marked the first time this group of artists had displayed their work together, demonstrating a very diverse range of influences including fluency in technology, incredible attention to design and detail, and more historic factors, such as western classical art and Korea's many years of occupation by foreign powers.

This exhibition highlighted how contemporary Korean artists were exploring and bringing into play a wide diversity of new materials bound together by the use of time-established and more innovative techniques.

Indonesian Eye logo

Indonesian Eye: Fantasies and Realities presented the works of 18 Indonesian artists encompassing the artistic heritage, rich tradition and the rapidly evolving society of present day Indonesia. The exhibition gathered works from across the Indonesian Archipelago with the aim of showcasing a wide selection of leading contemporary artists.

Fantasies and Realities explored the uniqueness of Indonesian art which focuses on the local appropriation of culture expressed in a fresh and at times deceptively naive new language made up of myths, realities and child’s play mixed with a more abstract artistic and realistic expression.The exhibition was held in Jakarta from June 9 to July 10, 2011 and in London from September 1 to October 9, 2011.

Korean Eye Moon Generation sponsored by Standard Chartered was launched at the Saatchi Gallery in 2009. The exhibition brought together a group of leading Korean contemporary artists and galleries to create an international exhibition of Korean contemporary art. Following an exhibition in Seoul, May 2009 the show travelled to Saatchi Gallery, London. The London exhibition took place from 20 June to 5 July 2009.
